COSTA RICA 2006/2007

Day 1: Sunday December 24
Schiphol at 7:20h. Timo's sister brought us to the airport. She lives close and it was nice to not worrying about trains and stress.
At Schiphol Airport we got 2 of the the transparent bags for fluids in hand luggage that we heard about. And with check in I notice that fireworks are prohibited. That's a shame because I wanted to bring some 'stars' for newyears-eve.

We fly with Delta Airlines. This will be our first flight with this company. We have read positive and negative reviews on the internet. But our experiences are really positive.
Quick boarding through use of boarding-zones (business class first, then from the back to the front so no-one has to wait for people to put their luggage in the overheadcompartements and sit down). And in our seats there were pillows, blankets and headphones. When we flew Martinair 2 years ago, we had to buy these headphones for $ 2 each! After take-off we got a bag with yellow earplugs, an eye mask and a menu card.
On the big screens there were updates throughout the flight. Maps, height, speed, local time and remaining time to destination were shown.

Juan Santamaria ligt dichter bij Alajuela Our flight has one intermediate stop in Atlanta. We have to wait there for 4,5 hours and that's a long time. Well, it gives us some space when flights are delayed, and that's a comfort.
The last time we went to Costa Rica, we noticed that the International Airport Juan Santamaria is much closer to the city of Alajuela then it is to San Jose, the capital.
The airport for domestic flights Tobias Bolaņos (allso Pavas) is closer to San Jose.

We don't want to have to ride long ways in the middle of the night, so we booked a hostel in Alajuela:  Hotel Tropical Alajuela. $ 15 PerPersonPerNight = pppn for a private bedroom with shared (hot) showers and toilet (baņos). The owner Alonso Arburola has a supercar: a 33 year old Volkswagen with great interior. The windows can be taken out and it rides like a train. Because the distance to the airport is short, the ride is free included when you book a night. Our adventure starts right now.

We got a room that's not right next to the (pretty busy) road, but there's a bunkbed and a seperate bed. It's not so bad to sleep in seperate beds because we're just there to sleep...
