COSTA RICA 2006/2007

Tips and little knowhows.

* hot showers aren't common. You have to look for them or ask. And still, it's more lukewarm

* Costa Rican's are called Tico's.

* The little domestic airport Tobias Bolaņos, lets you  leave (some) luggage up to three weeks. That was very convenient for us, having brought presents for Simone (didn't need them the first week) and leaving laundry and thick clothes we needed upnorth, when we flew south. Traveling lightly is the best way.

* The backpacks we borrowed were incredible useful. A good backpack will make your shoulders lift hardly any weight. The bag will lean on your hips making your back feel light and your walking easy.
You should never take heavy suitcases. Just thinking about carrying them uphill makes me tired. Or even when they have wheels: the roads won't be normal to roll them; it's all gravel and dust.

* Costa Rica's currency is 1 dollar to 520 Colones (at this time).

* In tourist spots as where we were, everybody accepts dollars, but your change will be in Colones, mostly.

* Bugs DO BITE. Doesn't matter how well you rub yourself with the very best of lotions. They might bite less, but they do bite.

* A local saying in Drake Bay: the first 12 days of the year, behave themselves in the same way the 12 month of the year do. So it will probably be dry on January 3 (like March) and it will probably rain on the 8th (like August).

* Best buys upfront

- hiking shoes and hiking socks.
(dry feet are very important to stay in a good mood)

- underwater sack for digital camera's.
(dry camera's are also very important for the same good mood)

- Fleece sweater. I never wear them, but it was soooooo comfortable warm and lightweight, with pouches, a collar and zipper.

- Poncho made out of good material. The noisy thin ones annoyed me the first minute. Ours was much better.

- Mosquito net. Ours hasn't been used because there was one present, but still it would have been indispensable.

- Headlight. Just as mountaineers use, to keep both hands free and give a good deal of light (LEDlight)

(other usefull things we allready bought or had:
 teva sandalen, snorkel, extra bikini's,, international adapter, lonelyplanet, binoculars, studentcards, journal, and a lot of other stuff that was on our do-pack-list, like plastic bags (laundry), etc.

I've got a guestbook! I'ts mostly in Dutch
 but I would really like it if you have the chance to leave a message if you have read this story
with interest, or if you have had any
good use of my tips.
Thank you!
